One on the inside (meniscus   <span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">medial) and another on the outside (lateral meniscus). Seen from above, the menisci have the   <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">\u201cC\u201d shape. They are made up of fibrocartilage similar to cartilage   <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">of our ears. Today we know that the menisci have a   <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">important contribution to a healthy knee, with an important role in joint <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">joint stability, transmission of forces between the femur and tibia and lubrication of the <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">joint.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-71f77e1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"71f77e1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">I have pain in my knee, could I have a meniscus injury?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2d70afe elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2d70afe\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>There are basically two types of meniscus injuries, also known as  <span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">meniscal tears. Acute ruptures are most common in young, active patients   <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">which are normally associated with the practice of sport and are the result of a movement  <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">torsion. On the other hand, we also have degenerative lesions, which are more   <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">frequent in a slightly older population (usually from the age of <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">from the age of 40) and often appear after small movements <\/span> <span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">(squatting, slight twisting or falling, prolonged kneeling, etc.). The complaints   <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">most frequently related to meniscus injuries are pain, joint swelling <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">(swelling) and irregularities in the movement of the knee (such as feeling something <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">inside the knee or feeling the joint locked).<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-89d0884 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"89d0884\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How is a meniscus injury diagnosed?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c25e0b5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c25e0b5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>An orthopaedic knee surgeon from our team will want to know the story of your  <span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">injury and determine what signs and symptoms you have. Finally, your orthopaedic knee surgeon will   <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">request complementary diagnostic tests, which consist of carrying out a  <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). The orthopaedic knee surgeon will consider the   <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">their level of activity, age, location and type of meniscus injury, time elapsed  <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">since the injury, the symptoms it presents and other associated injuries. If the injury   <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">the meniscus is stable, there is no knee blockage or other associated injuries, <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">the first approach is often conservative treatment (without <\/span> <span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">surgery). You will be recommended to wear walking crutches for a few days,   <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">but as soon as possible start flexing and extending the knee. Many   <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">Sometimes it is necessary to carry out physiotherapy sessions with the aim of reducing <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">inflammation, recover joint mobility and strengthen the muscles around the joint. <\/span> <span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">knee. In cases where conservative treatment is not effective, when we are   <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">unstable meniscus lesions or when we have associated lesions, such as an anterior cruciate ligament <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">anterior cruciate ligament injury, we have to consider surgery.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-75eb7af elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"75eb7af\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What is done in a meniscus operation?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6b39357 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6b39357\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Meniscus surgeries are performed using a surgical technique called  <span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">arthroscopy. After visualizing and exploring your meniscus injury, the knee surgeon will decide to   <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">whether it is possible to repair the meniscus or whether it will be necessary to regularize the meniscus lesion. The   <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">meniscus injuries can only be repaired if the meniscus is in good condition and <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">there is blood supply in the area of the tear (there is no blood in the entire meniscus and <\/span> <span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">where there is no blood, there can be no healing). If the   <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">conditions, the option will usually be to repair the meniscus using various <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">various systems that allow stitches to be made in the meniscus, closing the lesion and leading to <\/span> <span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">healing. If repair is not possible, the only option to reduce pain is to   <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">removing the part of the meniscus that is torn and causing pain (regularizing the meniscus), <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">trying to leave as much of the meniscus healthy as possible.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3ee22fa elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3ee22fa\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What is the recovery after meniscus surgery?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-32c4d39 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"32c4d39\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In the case of meniscus regularization, after surgery you can mobilize your knee <span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">immediately without limitations, do partial weight-bearing and walk with 2 crutches (between 5 and <\/span> <span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">15 days). You can start driving as soon as you have good mobility and no pain   <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">no fluid inside the knee. We recommend a short period of physiotherapy to   <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">recover muscle mass and joint mobility. It is expected that he will be able to start again   <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">impact sports activity around 4 to 6 weeks after surgery (in the case of <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">of the lateral meniscus, this period may be slightly longer). <\/span> <span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.3px;\">In the case of meniscus repair, recovery is a little slower.
